Multi-purpose jewelry has been around for centuries. Fine jewelry houses would design incredible convertible pieces for royal households that could be used multiple ways – tiaras could be converted into necklaces, two bracelets could be combined into a necklace, and one pin could be broken apart and worn as two.

The same was true for vintage costume jewelry. While the intricacies of construction were simplified and the materials not as precious, the potential versatility of a piece was not lost on the designers of fashion jewelry. The ability to mix and match your jewelry to your outfit was still a possibility for many of the fun pieces designed in the 20th Century.
